The rising popularity of boomer shooters continues | First Impressions - Turbo Overkill

Turbo Overkill is a high-octane first-person shooter that blends the intense bullet-hell and high speed action of retro titles like Doom and Quake with a cyberpunk aesthetic. The game thrusts players into a dystopian future where advanced technology and chaos converge.

The game’s strengths are evident, with its intense combat system that demands precision and strategy. The controls are incredibly responsive, enabling players to master movement and maneuverability and feel 100% in control at all times. The art direction and visuals are impression, as the pixelated textures and low-poly models blend seamlessly with contemporary lighting and effects, resulting in a world that feels nostalgic, modern, and futuristic all at the same time.

The narrative, while not groundbreaking, aligns well with the boomer shooter genre as players step into the role of Johnny Turbo to save Paradise from the grip of the rogue AI SYN. I can see why it’s currently taking the gaming community by storm, more specifically with its Steam’s overwhelmingly positive ratings. This game is indeed something special, paying homage to classic titles while carving its own distinct identity.

Masterclass in Anti-Fatigue Open World Design | Ghost of Yotei Review

Ghost of Yotei, the newest installment in the acclaimed feudal Japan action series, shifts the stage to Ezo/Hokkaido Japan, introducing a new protagonist, Atsu, and a razor-sharp revenge narrative. Set during a tumultuous period, the game follows Atsu as she embraces the path of the Ghost to hunt down her targets. While built upon the foundations of its predecessors, Yotei immediately distinguishes itself by prioritizing refined gameplay flow and anti-fatigue design over overwhelming map density, setting it up as a truly modern open-world experience.
